The Best and Worst Shoes for Heel Pain This Fall and Winter
Heel pain can interrupt daily routines, making it hard to concentrate on tasks. Yet, choosing the right shoes can go a long way toward easing heel pain. Here’s some insight into what to consider when shoe shopping this season.

Heel pain brings many patients to Capital Podiatry Associates in Alexandria, Virginia. Many factors often combine to cause heel pain, and your footwear can be part of the problem — or the solution.

Leland Gilmore, DPM, and Shalin Panchigar, DPM, share information below on how to select shoes that won’t cause or exacerbate heel pain this fall and winter.

What to consider when choosing fall or winter shoes

Your feet bear the weight of your entire body, and your muscles, bones, and connective tissues perform innumerable movements as you move through your day. Equally crucial, the way your shoes are constructed determines how much support they give your feet and ankles. Some shoes may cause pain, while others make it far easier to stay on your feet

When shoe shopping, search for options that are aesthetically appealing but also made to support your feet. Consider the following factors:

Rigidity

Is the rigidity of the sole appropriate for the type of activities you’ll do while wearing the shoes? For example, a pair of hiking boots should offer much more support than a pair of loafers you’ll wear around the house.

Cushioning and contouring

Proper cushioning is essential if you’re concerned about heel pain. Shoes without enough cushioning don’t absorb much of the shock that’s created as you move. They can leave your feet tired and sore, even when you haven’t exerted yourself.

That said, cushioning is critical if you’re shopping for athletic trainers. Interior contouring also supports and stabilizes your feet while walking or exercising.

Comfort vs. style

Far too many of us make our footwear purchasing choices based on little more than the shoes’ appearance. While there’s nothing wrong with styles that are attractive and fun, the primary focus should be on giving your feet the support they need if you want to avoid heel pain.

If you’re buying dress shoes, try to balance style with comfort. If you wear high heels, be aware that they can cause or worsen many foot issues. There’s no benefit to having a great-looking pair of shoes that are so uncomfortable you either won’t wear them or can’t stop counting the minutes until you can take them off.

Your foot’s anatomy

Some people have wider feet, while others might have a very high or nearly flat arch. All of these circumstances affect the way a pair of shoes will fit.

Try on several pairs while shopping. Put on both shoes and walk around a bit, if possible. Not all shoes are shaped the same, so be prepared to try on numerous pairs to find options that feel good on your arches and heels.
